I just read a quote this morning that "pleasure is only an intermission to pain". I've also heard that happiness is like a "inn on the bumpy road of life". I'm sure there is a million more of those type of analogies. Here's one about marriage: "Marriage isn't supposed to make you happy, it's supposed to make you married." I believe though that we can have an undercurrent of happiness throughout our lives that is more consistent than any other emotion -- more like a state of being. We dip and soar, but we're still on the "swing" of happiness...hey! there's another one!
